SUSTAINABLE GLAMPING: THE NEXT FRONTIER IN ECO-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION, EVIDENCE FROM LUFASI LODGES AND OCEANVIEW BEACH CAMP, LAGOS, NIGERIA

Authors

Abstract

Sustainable tourism is a rapidly changing industry, and there are a number of accommodation models that prioritize the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability while also ensuring the comfort of their guests. Of these, “glamping” (a mix of glamorous and camping) is developing into an attractive front-line, especially in areas that are already facing ecological and infrastructural issues. The study will set a focus on two Lagos-based pioneer glamping sites (Lufasi Lodges and Oceanview Beach Camp) in order to explore the implementation and effects of sustainable glamping. A mixed method research design was used which included quantitative surveys of guests (n=400), qualitative interviews with management, qualitative interviews with local stakeholders, and environmental audits and local economic assessments. This allowed for an overall assessment of green practice adoption, guest satisfaction, environmental performance and economic contributions. Results indicate that both properties have integrated high level of resource efficiency, waste reduction and renewable energy utilization, well above the national average of hospitality properties. There is a considerably high level of satisfaction with the guest service and willingness to recommend and return for glamping experiences. There are also positive local economic impacts, including high level of local employment and procurement. The study, however, highlights issues such as uncertainties in the regulatory framework, gaps in infrastructure, and upfront investment expenses. It found that it is feasible to operate a sustainable glamper and that it can provide better guest experiences and tangible positive effects on the environment in the Nigerian setting, supported with extensive tables, charts and visual analyses. The paper ends with policy studies for the promotion of scaling up of sustainable glamping; using it as a model for eco-friendly accommodation in West Africa and in other emerging economies.
