Education is the backbone of national development, social change and economic competitiveness in the 21st Century. Despite these efforts, Nigeria's education sector still faces myriad problems, such as low budgets, outdated teaching methods, outdated facilities, low teacher competency, a disconnect between curriculum and job market needs, implementation gaps, insecurity, and unequal access to digital resources. Many of these barriers have limited the capacity of the education system to generate graduates with the skills needed to drive sustainable development of the nation and competitiveness in the world. The paper explores the strategic process of incorporating innovation in education, modern pedagogical approaches, and evidence-based reforms in policies to reimagine the Nigerian educational system to be more inclusive, resilient, and future-oriented. It examines how digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), competency-based education, open and distance learning (O&D), teacher professional learning, and curriculum innovation will shape learning outcomes and quality of education. The paper makes the case that no educational transformation can happen solely on the basis of technological innovation, but that coherent policy implementation, effective governance, adequate financing, collaboration among stakeholders and pedagogical practices centered on the learner are needed. It is therefore concluded that Nigeria has a lot of potential to re-position the education system by implementing innovation-driven education reforms that are in line with global education trends and that are responsive to the realities of Nigeria. The paper suggests more investments in education, more robust training for teachers, institutionalization of digital pedagogy, better coordination of policy and the creation of long-term monitoring and evaluation frameworks to guarantee education's transformation.
