SCHOOL-COMMUNITY COLLABORATION AS EDUCATIONAL INPUTS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SECONDARY EDUCATION IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

Authors

Abstract

Community collaboration in school management is increasingly important because schools operate within communities that supply their students, making the relationship mutually supportive and essential for achieving educational success. For example, the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) or School Governing Bodies (SGBs) may agree to pay certain levy during their school meetings to support the school in employing extra lesson teachers or assist in the area of students’ discipline. Also, Old Students Association, Civil Society Initiative (CSI), Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) may decide to give scholarship to indigent and brilliant students, donate block of classrooms among other areas of needs. The absence of these may account for inadequate funding, demoralized teachers, lack of discipline, inadequate instructional facilities and a general dilapidated state of schools. It seems that public and private secondary schools in Nigeria are lacking necessary learning tools to aid teaching and learning environment. This may be traced to the number of times the school collaborates with the community towards achieving school needs as well as the benefits and challenges faced in responding to such collaboration. This study aligns with the theme Leveraging Public-Private Partnerships for Education and will assess the number of times and duration of schools collaboration with community members, the benefits and challenges of school-community collaboration. The findings will provide useful insights for educational stakeholders to have better understanding on how to adjust school policies and programmes in favour of community collaboration. This will assist the school in areas of scholarship, fund raising, students’ discipline and donation of materials.
