Abstract

This research was conducted to explore the perception of the teachers of Yoruba Language in choice senior secondary schools in Ilesa, Nigeria on the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching Yoruba Language in selected senior secondary schools in Ilesa, Nigeria. The research design assumed was the survey research design. The study was done in two local government areas (LGA) within Ilesa metropolis. Ten senior secondary schools (five in each LGA) were picked randomly, and all the teachers of Yoruba Language in sampled schools were listed. The instruments used was Teachers’ Perception on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Questionnaire (r=0.78). Descriptive analysis of data was performed by using the descriptive statistics of means, standard deviation, percentage and frequency counts. The results were that the Yoruba Language teachers saw the challenges of using AI to teach Yoruba Language as AI has the potential to perpetuate biases unless designed thoughtfully, stifles critical thinking among students, teachers have a hard time adjusting to the use of AI in the classroom, encourages plagiarism, and that not all students have equal access to AI-powered tools. Among the recommendations was that School management body should set up an AI Support Centre in their schools that will raise awareness and provide support to its implementation in the teaching of Yoruba Language.
