Abstract

It is observed that when students are not interested in a subject, they may lack the motivation to read or study the subject, thereby leading to shallow understanding of the it and consequently weak performance. This study investigated student’s perceived influence of edutainment on their academic performance in secondary school Biology in Owo. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive design of the survey type was adopted. Population of the study comprised all secondary school students in Owo, while a sample of 250 secondary school students were randomly selected from ten secondary schools that were also randomly selected from Owo local government area of Ondo State. The research instrument was a self-designed and validated questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was measured using test retest method and it yielded 0.701 to Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics. The administered instrument was collected and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and means. The result showed that edutainment could lead to improved academic performance (X=2.89). The result also revealed that edutainment-based instruction can enhance student`s motivation engagement (X= 2.83). Findings equally revealed that the use of edutainment in Biology education could have a positive contribution to students' retention and understanding of Biology concepts (X=2.78).
