Vol. 1 Issue 1 - 2024
This study was carried out to investigate participation in cultural activities as predictor of learning outcomes in Yorùbá value concepts among Yorùbá language pre-service teachers in colleges of education in the South-West, Nigeria. The study adopted the sequential mixed methods (QUAN+qual). The purposive sampling technique was employed to select six colleges of education in Southwestern Nigeria that had Yorùbá language pre-service teachers in 100, 200 and 300 levels at the time of the study. The instruments used were Participation in Yorùbá Cultural Activities Rating Scale (r=0.81), Yorùbá Value Concepts Test (r=0.84), Attitude to Yorùbá Value Concepts Scale (r= 0.84) and Practice of Yorùbá Value Concepts Scale (r=0.79). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlation and Multiple regression at 0.05 alpha level. The study revealed high participation in Yorùbá cultural activities among respondents, who engaged in various cultural practices such as cooking, dancing, and traditional crafts. It was therefore recommended that cultural values should be included in the professional development, teacher training programs, and formal education, so that the spread of cultural knowledge and values may be improved.
